How I (Don’t) Do It All

I was at a networking event the other day when a professional woman leaned in close to me after she found out I had three children in addition to my full-time job.
“How,” she asked, “do you do it all?”
I tipped my head back and laughed. “I don’t.”

Saying “Yes” After a Year of “No.”

“You always say no.”

My son said this to me nonchalantly at dinner one day as though he were casually observing a fact, like, “The sky is blue,” or “You’re wearing a dress today.” I wanted to mount an argument, but the truth is that I had gotten in the habit of saying, “No.” It was a little bit of a problem.
